3v3 League Rules
*US Soccer Rules apply if not modified within*
Teams will be placed into divisions based upon age determined by birth year. See the age matrix to the right. Teams that span more than one age group will be placed into the division of the oldest player on the team. All players will be required to register on the SportsPlex website via TeamSnap to verify their age and for liability reasons.
The playing field is 65 feet long by 32 feet wide for all ages. The goals are four feet high by six feet wide.
Plain and simple.
Players must stay upright and “on their feet.” If a slide is attempted to save a ball from going out of bounds, absolutely no contact with the opposing team will be permitted. Infraction of this rule results in a free direct kick for the opposing team.
A goal may only be scored from a touch (offensive or defensive) within a team’s offensive half of the field (Ball must be completely on the offensive half of the field: Can not be touching the midline). If a player in their defensive end kicks the ball across midline and the ball hits another player (offensive or defensive) and the ball goes in the goal, a goal will be awarded.
The goal box, a 6 foot arch, is directly in front of the goal. The goals are four feet high by six feet wide. There is no ball contact allowed within the goal box, however, any player may pass through the goal box. If the ball comes to rest in the goal box, a goal kick is awarded regardless of who touched the ball last. Any part of the ball or player’s body on the line is considered in the goal box and is an extension of such. Once the ball has broken the plane of the goal box, if the ball is touched by the defensive team, a goal will be awarded. If the offensive player touches after the ball has broken the plane, a goal kick will be awarded. The plane of the goal box extends upward.
The game shall consist of two 20 minute halves separated by a two minute halftime periods. A coin toss will determine direction and possession before the start of the game. The team winning the coin toss will choose which goal to defend and the other team will kick. Games tied after regulation play shall end in a tie, except in the playoffs. A team, at the discretion of the referee, will forfeit at game time if they are not present. There are no timeouts during 3v3 games.
Currently, with COVID-19 restrictions and guidelines, there are no playoffs planned.
Shall be awarded if, in the referee’s opinion, a scoring opportunity was nullified by an infraction (the infraction does not automatically result in a red card). It is a direct kick taken from the center of the midfield line(U8-U10) and the “Mark” (U12 and older) with all players behind the ball and the player taking the kick. This is a “deadball” kick. If a goal is not scored, the defense obtains possession with a goal kick.
Deliberate handling of the ball that denies the opposing team a goal or an obvious goal scoring opportunity will result in the following: a penalty kick will be awarded & the player committing the foul will be sent off and shown a red card (at referee’s discretion). All other hand and/or arm contact with the ball, regardless of positioning of the arms, will result in a hand ball being called and result in a direct kick.
Players that receive two yellow cards in one game will result in a red card. (Please see Red card rule) Any player accumulating three yellow cards during a season will automatically be suspended for their next game (no exceptions). Anyone team receiving a yellow card will play a player down for 5 minutes or until 3 additional goals are scored by the opposing team, whichever happens first.
ABSOLUTELY NO SPITTING ON THE TURF WILL BE PERMITTED. Anyone seen spitting on the turf will instantly be given a Red Card and serve the penalty based on the SportsPlex and league guidelines. Anyone that spits on or in the direction of any other player, coach, referee or spectator will have the police called on them and charges pressed to the fullest extent of the law.
Referees have the right to eject a player or coach from the game for continual disobedience or as a result of an incident that warrants sending off. The team may then continue with their remaining players, however, the team must complete the entire game a player short. The player receiving the red card will automatically be suspended for their next 3 games (no exceptions). Players that are red carded need to leave the facility, including the fan and team areas and will not be permitted to be a spectator at following games during their suspension. If a player is red carded for fighting, they will be ejected from the league and banned from the facility for the duration of the season. If the fighting incident occurs in the second half of the season, they will not be eligible to play in the following season.
Referees have the right to eject a coach or parent from the game and facility for continual disobedience or as a result of an incident that warrants ejection. Coaches or parents whom are ejected by the referee or SportsPlex staff must leave the field or building before play will continue. If a coach or parent refuses to leave, the game may be forfeited in favor of the opposing team.
In all deadball situations, defending players must stand at least five yards away from the ball. If the defensive player’s goal is closer than five yards, the ball shall be played five yards from the goal box, in line with the place of the penalty
The ball shall be kicked into play from the sideline instead of thrown in. The ball is considered in play when the ball is touched with a foot and moves one full rotation.
All deadball kicks (kickins, free kicks, kickoffs) are indirect with the exception of corner/penalty kicks.
May be taken from any point on the endline.
6 is the maximum number of players on a team; three field players and substitutes (A team must have a minimum of 2 field players). 5 Players are recommended for 3v3 Soccer. Players may only play on (one) team per division. There are no goalkeepers in 3v3. Coed teams must have a minimum of one female player on the field at all times. Teams that have only one female will forfeit their remaining games if the female participant is no longer able to compete. Players lost during a season may not be replaced by new players for the remainder of any season with the exception if any roster only has 1 female player in a co-ed league and that female needs to be replaced to prevent forfeiting the remainder of the league.
Coaches are required to have some form of background check done. Risk management are accepted if you have one through another league or organization. Card must be verified and a copy on the SportsPlex file. If Risk Management isn’t available, the South Jefferson SportsPlex will provide the required background check for $20. No coaches will be allowed to coach, even as a guest, without background checks. No coach may be younger than 16 years of age. U16 and older are not required to have coaches on the sidelines.
All players must be registered on their team’s roster form before the season begins (player must be on roster before the first game).
Teams will be on the opposite side of the field from the fence behind the goals and barriers in a marked area. Only the coach and players on the roster may be on the turf area.
Substitutions may be made at any deadball situation, regardless of possession. Teams must get the referee’s attention and players are to enter and exit from their bench area.
It is the responsibility of the coach or team captain to reschedule any game where one team is unable to play. Games may not be rescheduled within 48 hours of the scheduled game and must be made up prior to the end of the season. Any game not played that was cancelled will result in a loss for the initiating team with a 6-0 goal differential for division table standings. If both teams agree, a tie may be awarded.
Games will start on time, regardless of team preparedness. Any player may be cautioned with a yellow card if it is deemed by the referee that the player is intentionally time wasting. eg: if a player intentionally kicks the ball long distances away from the playing field in order to waste time. Any team not on the field and ready to play at the start of any game or half will automatically will be punishable by rewarding the opposing team with a penalty kick.
Games will be scored according to the following: 3 points for a win; 1 point for a tie; 0 points for a loss. A forfeited game is scored as a 6-0 win for the team present.
For teams that are tied in record, if one team forfeited a game, they are the lower seed. For teams tied in record where one team received a forfeit, games against the teams forfeiting are not counted when figuring the tiebreaker. In table play, ties between three or more teams will be broken by (1) head to head results between the tied teams (2) goal difference in head to head games (3) goals against in head to head games (4) goal difference in pool play games (5) goals against in pool play games (6) shootout. Ties between two teams in record whom have tied each other will be broken by (1) goal difference in pool play games (2) goals against in pool play games (3) shootout. Each tiebreaking criterion is carried out to its fullest in determining the seeds in ties between 3 or more teams.
Protests are strongly discouraged as this is a friendly season and facility. Referee judgment calls are not grounds for a protest.
The age matrix governed by US Soccer will be followed based on birth year. Any coach or team caught cheating by playing with ineligible players too old for a division will be suspended for the rest of the season. Age verification may be requested by opposing teams prior to the start of any game but only once per player once age is verified by the parents or player.
A coed team may be made up of any combination of male and female players. However, during play, there must be at least one female player on the field at all times.
Good sportsmanship is to prevail at all times. Coaches will be held responsible for the conduct of themselves, their players, players’ parents and spectators. Anyone deemed violating these standards by a referee or SportsPlex staff member may be removed from the facility at any time. This included all forms of swearing.
All players must wear jerseys/shirts during play and each team is recommended to bring both a light and dark colored jersey/shirt. If both teams are wearing the same color, a coin flip in table play will determine which team must change. In playoffs, the higher seed will have the option.
Pinnies will be provided by the SportsPlex if neither team has a change of jersey available.
